The hockey stick in the example has a traditional shape and is shown from the side view. It’s drawn with hockey tape along the blade and various graphic elements along the shaft.

While this is a very simple tutorial, it’s recommended that you start it in pencil and make light and easy to erase lines in case of a mistake. You can darken them once you’ve defined all of the hockey stick’s parts and various elements.

Step 1 – Draw the Hockey Stick’s Blade

Begin by outlining the hockey stick’s blade. Make it’s overall shape narrower towards the back. Give the blade a somewhat rounded front with a fairly straight top and bottom that then curve upwards into the shaft.

Step 2 – Draw the Shaft

Outline the shaft going up from the blade. Make this part of the stick fairly narrow. Also, draw it on an angle as shown in the example.

To define the shaft you simply need to make two parallel straight lines and join them at the top. Depending on your skill as an artist making the lines straight can be a challenge. For this reason you can optionally use a ruler to help you. When joining the two lines make the corners of the shaft slightly rounded.

Once done with the above, you should have a basic outline drawing of a hockey stick’s overall shape. Make sure that you are happy with how it looks before moving on to the smaller details.

Step 3 – Draw the Graphic Elements Along the Shaft

Add some basic graphic elements along the shaft. Hockey stick usually have these as part of the manufacturer’s or team’s branding.

In this case, to simulate some branding, you can draw a pair of stripes near the shaft’s bottom, a tall angled strip near it’s lower middle and another stripe near the top.

Step 4 – Draw the Wrapping Along the Blade

For the last part of the line drawing add some hockey tape wrapped around the stick’s blade. You can simply define this with a series of lines as shown in the example above. Try and make the lines slightly curved or wavy. This will make wrapping look more natural.

After you’ve added the hockey tape, trace over your lines to darken them. You can either do so by pressing harder on the pencil or by using a thin black marker.

Step 5 – Color the Hockey Stick

In this case the hockey stick is wooden with parts of it painted various colors.

Make the stick’s blade and the lower part of the shaft a dark grey. Color the upper part of the shaft a yellow brown (to show that it’s wood). Make the hockey tape a very light grey. Make the two lower stripes the same color as the upper part of the shaft (yellow brown), the angled strip red and the top stripe dark grey (same as the blade/lower part of shaft).

You can of course use a different color combination if you prefer, especially for the graphic elements.

Conclusion

This really simple tutorial shows how to draw a hockey stick. It explains how to first outline it’s overall shape and then how to show some hockey tape along it’s blade and simulate some branding elements along it’s shaft. The end result is a drawing of a hockey stick with a fairly traditional.
