How to Draw a Newspaper Step by Step
How to draw a newspaper is what is shown in this eight step guide. It provides simple example artwork accompanied by easy to follow instructions.

In this case the newspaper is drawn folded (as fresh newspapers generally are). The guide’s focus is on showing how to create an appearance of certain content without adding a lot of small details. The end goal is to get a simple drawing that still has all of the essential elements to be easily recognizable as a newspaper.
You will (optionally) need to do some erasing in one of the steps so start the drawing in pencil and make light lines. This is good practice in general as it will allow you to more easily correct mistakes. Darken your lines once you have all parts of the newspaper outlined.
Step 1 – Draw the Folded Paper Sheet

First, define the outer layer of the newspaper. Draw this folded at the bottom as shown in the examples. Outline the fold with a “U” shape as shown in the example. Also, draw the background facing side of the sheet to be a little lower down than the front side.
Overall, the sheet should have a fairly rectangular shape but make it’s outline somewhat wavy and uneven. This will make the newspaper look more natural (like it’s been bent in some places).
Step 2 – Draw the Inner Folds of the Paper

Draw the inner side of the newspaper sheet sticking out from in between the outer one. Make this similar in shape but narrower. Draw it’s upper ends going a little higher up than those of the outer part of the paper. You may need to erase a little bit of the outline from the previous step when adding this in.
Step 3 – Draw Lines to Separate the Newspaper’s Sections

Add some divider lines to separate different sections of the newspaper. These are called the “cutoff rules” for horizontal lines and “cutoff columns” for vertical lines.
First, draw a horizontal line through the middle of the paper. Next, draw another line a little bit above that to make it a double. Finally, draw a vertical line to divide the area below these in half. You can make this line slightly curved to match the curvature of the newspaper sheet.
Step 4 – Write “News” as the Title

For the newspaper’s main title (the “masthead”) you can simply write out the word “news” or any other heading you might prefer. Try and keep this centered in relation to the paper sheet.
Step 5 – Draw a Photo

Add a photo to the newspaper by simply drawing a rectangle in it’s left column. There is no need to actually draw anything inside the rectangle (but you can if you want to) as the goal is to simply create an appearance of content.
Step 6 – Draw an Article Heading

At the top of the paper’s right column draw a long thin rectangle to make it look like there is an article heading in that area.
Step 7 – Draw the Text Lines

Finally, below the heading from the previous step, draw some broken up lines to make it look like the text of a news article.
After you’ve added the text lines, trace over your drawing with a thin black marker or darker pencil lines. Make the lines that define the main title the thickest and the lines that define the shape of the paper slightly thinner. Make the lines that define the article text fairly thick as well.
Step 8 – Shade the Newspaper Drawing

Finish the drawing by shading the inner folds of the newspaper grey. Make the photo and article heading a slightly darker grey.
You can create both greys by using a regular pencil. Simply apply more or less pressure to get the light and dark variants.
Conclusion – A Simple Newspaper Drawing Can Look Nice
This guide shows an easy way to create a drawing of a newspaper. As mentioned at the start, the goal is to show how you can create an overall appearance of content without having to actually draw all of the small details.
In this example the above is accomplished by simplifying the photo and heading of the newspaper into rectangles and the small text into lines.
Stylized art (like that in the examples) can be much easier to create than more realistic drawings. At the same time it can still look very nice and be easily recognizable as long as it still conveys the main shape and elements of a given object.
